Hi Wildcats,

This week we were pleased to have one of the FCPS centrally-based photographers strolling through the halls of Woodburn. You might notice a few additional photos in this News You Choose, spotting engaging and joyful expressions on our Wildcats. Those delightful expressions can consistently be traced to the bonds that our kiddos have with one another and stewards of the school that care so much about their engagement and progress. As Back to School Night approaches, know that we are excited to showcase all of the wonderful nuisances and charms that 3401 Hemlock holds each day.

Kelley and Matt

Attendance Matters  When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Read about how families can help form good attendance habits. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

2024-25 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R.

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Friday, September 30.

Dear Wildcats,

Thank you to all of the families that have been responsive on so many levels. Whether you’re donated extra supplies toward a classroom, joined us for our first PTA meeting of the school year, returned forms and papers that help structure our plans, or just wrote a kind message to one of your favorite Wildcats, we appreciate how you’ve helped us start this year with joy and purpose.

We want to thank all of our Wildcats who have participated in each of our first two safety drills, one fire drill and one lockdown drill. Their ability to navigate their habits with precision, knowing that safety is the #1 priority for everyone, is a testament to their attention to detail and care for each other. We are quite fortunate to have such a vibrant community.

Enjoy your weekend and thank you for all you do.

September 11: National Day of Service / Patriot Day

With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or lost their lives that day.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. Woodburn staff will be touching on this topic and support our learners with their awareness and service for a better tomorrow.

Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As we head into September, we would like to focus on the importance of regular school attendance. September is Attendance Awareness Month. The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance web page for tips and strategies

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Community Conversations with Superintendent Dr. Reid

Dear Wildcats,

We are so impressed with how quickly our students acclimated back into the building. It's like they never left Hemlock Drive. Part of that familiarity comes from how teachers and staff keep our mission and goals centered on student success.

At Woodburn, we follow a “Responsive Classroom” approach, which is a student-centered, social, and emotional learning design that creates safe, interactive and engaging classrooms communities for both students and teachers. At the beginning of the year, a large focus for our teachers and staff is building relationships with the goal to sustain and grow these relationships both with structure and organically. You won’t hear us talk about the “rules of the classroom” but rather, the community we’re looking to cultivate.

Woodburn is fortunate to have it’s first ever Early Childhood Inclusion Program up-and-running this week. We couldn’t be more fortunate to have Ms. Marisa LaPiana captaining this work. The connection with our littlest learners is key to helping them get the start they need for an enriching educational journey. They represent the joy and spirit in all of our Wildcats. We want to thank you for making this August a month to remember. We’re looking forward to more adventures in September and beyond.

Together We Grow,

Kelley and Matt

Woodburn Families,

Today we celebrate the end of another incredible school year! Our Wildcats have so much to be proud of as they reflect on their learning and growth. Most importantly, our students have stayed curious, kind, and silly. Each student is part of a larger Wildcat community that is close to our hearts.

In service of our students and community, teachers and staff remained committed to nurturing our caring culture, providing quality instruction to all students, and working collaboratively. These pillars guided our work this year and we could not have done it without your partnership and support. Thank you!

Over the summer we plan to stay connected through our Instagram and Facebook accounts. You are also welcome to contact us directly with any questions.

We hope summer break brings you and your family joy.

Well Wishes

Each year, we celebrate staff that will be taking on new adventures outside of Woodburn. Staff departing have shared messages below. We are grateful for the many ways they have served our community and will miss working alongside them. As we say, "Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat."

Patricia Deale, Special Education Department Chair

After two years of being the Special Education Department Chair at Woodburn, I will be transitioning to a new position in the county as a Special Education Instructional Mentor Coach. I am excited to continue to share my love for special education with new special education teachers as they enter the teaching world.

Victoria Meshanko, 3rd Grade Teacher

After 11 years in the classroom, I have decided to transition to supporting teachers and students with behavior, procedures, and routines at a school in need. Woodburn has been a wonderful home for the last 5 years. I have made so many amazing friendships and have felt love and support from the community and school. I will miss all the smiling, growing students who have passed through my door and passed me in the hallway. This school and community are doing the right work. ❤️

Estefani Pierola, 1st Grade Teacher

I have loved being back and teaching first grade at Woodburn this year. I will not be teaching next school year. The students at this school are amazing and hold a special place in my heart.

Chelsea Raineri, PE Teacher

As a first year teacher, Woodburn has held a special place in my heart. Our students, your children, have taught me more then I could’ve ever imagined and I will forever be grateful to have gotten to help them learn and grow into better versions of themselves. As I venture to working at the High School level, I will be sure to take what I have learned to help elevate the stage and create opportunities for my new students. A HUGE shout out to our administrative team and of course Mr. Shirley for guiding me on this journey to be the best I can be for your children. GO WILDCATS!!

Lizzy Waxler, ESOL Teacher

Hello Woodburn Community! It has been an honor to work with you and your students for the past three years. Next year, my journey continues at Poe Middle School, where I will be teaching 6th grade ESOL math.

Parent Volunteers Needed for the 6th Grade “Graduation” Party

Our 6th-grade wildcats are graduating this year! To celebrate, we are throwing a party from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 10th! We will have pizza, ice cream, lawn games, bracelet making, and kickball.

If you are a 6th-grade parent and would like to volunteer to help, please sign up here.

On Sunday, June 9th, Woodburn will be participating in the annual FSO Arts Integration Showcase event.  This features Woodburn 3rd and 4th grade student visual art and students are invited to attend an FSO concert afterwards that features music they’ve been learning about in school.  This year students have been working with Rhapsody in Blue and the FSO will also premier a new piece titled Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue.  This promises to be a really fun and inspiring event and we hope you will join us.  If you are interested in attending the concert, please email Ms. Ragona,[email protected] and Mr. Kettler, [email protected], to request tickets.  These tickets are being offered for free to our Woodburn community because of our partnership with the FSO.  If possible, please let us know by May 31st if you need tickets!

Date: Sunday, June 9th

Time: Art Show 3pm, Concert 4pm (show up by 3:30 to pick up tickets)

Location: Center for the Arts GMU Fairfax Campus (4373 Mason Pond Drive)
